It’s nearly impossible for anyone to accurately predict what the economy will look like a year from now. Interest rates could move higher or lower, consumer spending could shift, and market sentiment could change many times. That’s why I prefer owning large-cap, blue-chip stocks built to perform across a variety of economic environments rather than relying on a single trend.

These businesses may still move with the broader market, but their underlying strength could make them easier to hold through market volatility. In this article, I’ll highlight three Canadian blue-chip stocks that could remain attractive holdings through 2026 and beyond.

A bank built for compounding

A good place to start is Canada’s banking sector, where scale and customer relationships matter. Bank of Montréal (TSX:BMO) is one of North America’s largest banks, serving millions of customers across personal and commercial banking, wealth management, capital markets, and investment banking.

After surging by around 70% over the last 12 months, BMO stock currently trades at $246.16 per share with a market cap of $172.4 billion. Despite this solid rally, the stock still offers a 2.8% dividend yield.

In the second-quarter of its fiscal year 2026 (ended in April), BMO’s net income jumped 34% year over year (YoY) to $2.6 billion. Similarly, its adjusted net income climbed 34% YoY to $2.7 billion, while earnings per share (EPS) rose 41% to $3.53.

In the latest quarter, the bank’s return on equity also improved to 13%, and its Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) ratio stood at 13%, showing a strong capital position.

Meanwhile, Bank of Montréal is investing in artificial intelligence (AI), technology, and client relationships, which could support its long-term growth. That balance of profitability, capital strength, and innovation could help this bank stock continue soaring in the years to come.

An infrastructure giant for income

For investors seeking income and infrastructure exposure, Enbridge (TSX:ENB) remains another blue-chip stock worth watching. The Calgary-based energy infrastructure giant owns pipelines, natural gas transmission assets, gas utilities, storage facilities, and renewable power assets across North America.

At the time of writing, ENB stock traded at $79.23 per share with a market cap of about $173 billion. It has climbed 29% over the last year and offers a dividend yield of roughly 5%.

In the first quarter of 2026, Enbridge reported adjusted earnings of $2.1 billion. Its distributable cash flow during the quarter also increased by $74 million from a year ago, backed by higher cash distributions and lower current taxes.

Currently, Enbridge has a secured capital backlog of $40 billion, plus about $50 billion of unsanctioned opportunities tied to long-term energy demand. That gives this large-cap stock a clear path to keep growing while supporting its dividend.

A financial stock with global reach

A third blue-chip stock to consider right now is Sun Life Financial (TSX:SLF). The company provides insurance, wealth, health, and asset-management solutions across Canada, the United States, Asia, and other global markets.

Following a 29% year-to-date gain, SLF stock currently trades at $110.28 per share, giving it a market cap of $61.1 billion. At this market price, the stock has a 3.5% dividend yield.

In the March quarter, Sun Life posted $1.1 billion in underlying net profit, while its underlying EPS rose 4% YoY to $1.89. The company’s underlying return on equity also improved to 18.6%, and assets under management climbed to $1.6 trillion.

Interestingly, Sun Life Financial recently raised its quarterly dividend from $0.92 to $0.96 per share, while maintaining a strong Life Insurance Capital Adequacy (LICAT) ratio of 143%. On top of that, it continues to witness strong growth in Asia, giving this financial stock another solid long-term growth driver.

Should you invest $1,000 in Bank Of Montreal right now?

Building long-term wealth often starts with owning high-quality businesses that can continue performing through different economic environments. That’s exactly why blue-chip stocks remain popular among long-term Canadian investors. These companies usually have strong balance sheets, durable business models, and long track records of rewarding shareholders through steady growth and dividends.

In this article, I’ll highlight three Canadian blue-chip stocks that could be strong long-term investments through 2026 and beyond.

CIBC stock

The banking sector has faced its share of challenges in recent years, but Canada’s largest financial institutions continue showing resilience. Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (TSX:CM), or CIBC, remains one of the strongest blue-chip stocks investors can consider for long-term stability and income.

After surging 70% over the last year, CIBC stock was trading at $159.87 per share as of May 26, giving the bank a market cap of roughly $148 billion. It also offers a dividend yield of 2.7% at this market price.

The Toronto-based bank operates across several key business segments, including Canadian personal and business banking, commercial banking, wealth management, and capital markets. This diversified business model helps support stable earnings across different economic conditions.

While CIBC is expected to release its April 2026 quarter results later this week, its net profit for the quarter ended in January climbed 43% year-over-year (YoY). The bank’s Canadian personal and business banking segment posted a 25% YoY increase in earnings due to higher revenue and stronger net interest margins. Similarly, CIBC’s capital markets business delivered strong results with a 42% jump in net income from a year ago as trading and global markets activity improved.

More importantly, CIBC continues to maintain a strong balance sheet with a Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) ratio of 13.4%. I expect its focus on technology investments and operational efficiency to continue supporting growth over the next several years.

BMO stock

Another Canadian banking giant that continues to look attractive is Bank of Montreal (TSX:BMO). The company remains one of the country’s oldest and most established financial institutions, with growing operations across both Canada and the United States.

BMO stock recently traded at $223.64 per share with a market cap of roughly $158 billion. Over the last year, the stock has climbed almost 55% while offering a dividend yield of 3%.

In the April quarter, BMO’s adjusted net profit jumped by 34% YoY, while its adjusted earnings per share surged 40% from a year ago. Lower credit-loss provisions and strong fee-based revenue helped support these gains.

The bank’s Canadian personal and commercial banking segment posted a 15% rise in adjusted earnings, while its U.S. banking business delivered a 25% increase in adjusted net profit.

BMO has also been focusing on improving profitability while investing in long-term growth initiatives tied to artificial intelligence (AI), technology, and operational efficiency. For investors seeking dependable dividends combined with long-term growth potential, BMO continues to look like a strong blue-chip option.

Brookfield stock

Outside the banking sector, Brookfield (TSX:BN) remains another top Canadian blue-chip company worth watching closely. The global investment firm operates across several major industries, including infrastructure, renewable power, real estate, and private equity.

After gaining 21% over the last year, Brookfield stock currently trades at $63.60 per share with a market cap of about $156 billion.

One of Brookfield’s biggest strengths is its diversified business structure, which generates earnings from alternative asset management, wealth solutions, and operating businesses linked to infrastructure and renewable assets.

In the first quarter of 2026, Brookfield’s adjusted earnings improved due to stronger investment income and favourable foreign currency movements.

Meanwhile, the company continues investing aggressively in long-term trends such as renewable energy, infrastructure development, and sustainable solutions. Although Brookfield’s dividend yield is lower than the banks at 0.6%, its long-term growth potential and diversified global operations continue making it an attractive blue-chip stock for patient investors.

Investing in fundamentally strong blue-chip stocks that are part of expanding addressable markets should help you deliver outsized gains over time. In this article, I have identified three Canadian blue-chip stocks you can buy right now with $30,000 and benefit from market-beating gains over the next decade. Let’s see why.

Is this blue-chip stock a good buy?

Valued at a market cap of US$118 billion, Brookfield Asset Management (TSX:BAM) is among the largest alternative asset managers in the world. The blue-chip TSX stock went public in late 2022 and is currently down 17% from all-time highs.

In the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2025, Brookfield Asset Management reported record fee-related earnings of US$677 million (US$0.42 per share), up 17% year over year, and distributable earnings of US$649 million (US$0.40 per share), up 11%. Its fee-bearing capital grew 18% to US$539 billion, driven by US$135 billion in fundraising in 2024.

Brookfield Asset Management is strategically positioned to capitalize on major investment themes, including digitalization, clean energy infrastructure, and private credit. BAM highlighted its significant opportunity in artificial intelligence (AI) and data centre infrastructure, exemplified by its recent €20 billion infrastructure investment program with France to support AI deployment.

In recognition of its strong growth outlook, BAM increased its dividend by 15% to an annualized rate of US$1.75 per share, currently offering a forward yield of 3.3%. Analysts also expect its dividend per share to increase to US$2.18 per share in 2027.

A blue-chip TSX insurance stock

Great-West Lifeco (TSX:GWO) is another blue-chip TSX stock that offers investors a yield of 4.2%. Earlier this month, the Canada-based insurance giant raised its long-term objectives, targeting a base RoE (return on equity) of +19% (up from 16%). It also introduced a new capital generation target of +80% of base earnings while it maintained its 8-10% base EPS (earnings per share) growth target and a dividend payout target ratio of roughly 50%.

Great-West highlighted its transformation over the past five years, focusing on four at-scale business segments. Each segment is targeting mid-single-digit or higher organic growth, with Empower projecting double-digit earnings increases as it expands from retirement into wealth management.

Great-West emphasized its capital-light business mix, with strong growth in retirement and wealth management expected to drive higher returns. Management also outlined $250-$300 million in post-tax transformation charges over 36 months to improve efficiency.

The insurance heavyweight highlighted its strong capital position and cash generation, providing flexibility for organic growth investments, dividend increases, and potential merger and acquisition opportunities, with a focus primarily on the U.S. retirement market.

Is this TSX stock a good buy?

The final blue-chip TSX stock on my list is WSP Global (TSX:WSP), which operates a professional services consulting firm. In the next five years, analysts expect its revenue to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 7.2%. Moreover, adjusted earnings are forecast to expand from $8.05 per share in 2024 to $12.44 per share in 2027.

In the last 10 years, WSP stock has traded at a forward price-to-earnings multiple of 23.2 times. So, if it can maintain a similar multiple, the stock will be priced at $288 per share in early 2027, above the current price of $242 per share.

Analysts remain bullish and expect the TSX stock to gain over 20% in the next 12 months.
