Top TSX Stocks

The Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) is Canada’s primary exchange for investors to trade stocks from Canada’s top companies. Like other stock exchanges, the TSX brings together corporations, governments, and individual investors to create a healthy trading environment that operates in a fair and orderly manner. 

The TSX is the third largest stock exchange in North America and the ninth largest in the world (by the market cap of its shares). But 2025 proved that size isn’t everything—sometimes it’s about being in the right place at the right time with the right mix of assets.

In a year that will be remembered as a turning point for global markets, Canada’s TSX delivered a stunning reality check to investors who had grown comfortable betting exclusively on U.S. markets. The S&P/TSX Composite’s remarkable 30% surge didn’t just outperform the S&P 500’s respectable 16.39% gain—it dominated it, marking the first time in years that international equities broadly outpaced American stocks.

This wasn’t a fluke or a temporary commodity spike. It was the result of fundamental shifts in global market dynamics that played directly to Canada’s strengths: a market weighted toward energy and materials just as geopolitical tensions drove commodity prices higher, financial stocks that benefited from interest rate stability, and most importantly, valuations that offered genuine value in an increasingly expensive global market.

The TSX’s breakout year highlighted what many investors had overlooked—that geographic diversification isn’t just a textbook concept, but a practical necessity in today’s interconnected yet unpredictable markets. While U.S. tech giants grappled with regulatory scrutiny and slowing growth, Canadian companies were positioned to benefit from macro tailwinds that ranged from currency dynamics to strategic trade relationships.
