Volatility continues, which is something we welcome with open arms when it comes to putting together this monthly collection of our five favourite stocks to buy now. Because, if there’s a theme to pull through this month’s group, it’s that all these stocks are cheaper than they were not all that long ago. Yet, the prospects ahead of each are as robust as ever, and that’s a combination that’s music to the ears for long-term investors.

“Best Buys Now” Pick #1:

Brookfield Corp. (TSX:BN)

Brookfield Corporation (TSX: BN) is arguably Canada’s most consequential investment firm — a global alternative asset manager and owner-operator of real assets spanning infrastructure, renewable energy, real estate, private equity, and credit. What makes Brookfield Corp., aka “The Mother Ship,” distinct from its listed affiliates (BAM, BEP, BIP) is that it holds meaningful stakes in all of them, plus a large and growing insurance and wealth solutions platform, giving investors a diversified compounding machine in a single share.

Brookfield’s February 2026 full-year results were the strongest in the company’s history. Distributable earnings before realizations reached US$5.4 billion (up 11% per share) while fee-related earnings from its asset management business grew 22% to US$3.0 billion, driven by a record US$112 billion in new capital inflows during 2025. The board responded by raising the quarterly dividend 17%, and the company also repurchased over US$1 billion of its own shares during the year.

The most exciting near-term catalyst is Brookfield’s aggressive positioning in AI infrastructure. In late 2025, it launched the Brookfield AI Infrastructure Fund with a US$10 billion equity target—and immediately secured US$5 billion in commitments from partners including NVIDIA and KIA. Together with co-investors and financing, the fund is targeting up to US$100 billion in AI infrastructure assets, spanning energy, land, data centres, and compute. Brookfield also announced the creation of Radiant, a new NVIDIA Cloud Partner, to provide full-stack AI services leveraging its owned infrastructure. This isn’t a passive bet on AI. It is Brookfield inserting itself as the builder and operator of AI’s physical backbone.

The acquisition of the remaining 26% of Oaktree Capital, completed in late 2025, is another meaningful catalyst. Oaktree brings one of the world’s premier credit platforms fully under Brookfield’s roof, adding nearly US$200 million to fee earnings and meaningfully expanding its reach into the institutional credit market.

With many arrows in the quiver, so to speak, management has articulated a clear ambition to double the business by 2030. With deployable capital at a record US$188 billion, a freshly closed AI infrastructure fund, full ownership of Oaktree, and an expanding private wealth distribution network in the U.S. and Japan, the building blocks for that doubling are tangibly in place. The structural tailwinds —private credit replacing bank lending, institutional capital flowing into infrastructure, and the multi-trillion-dollar AI build-out requiring massive real asset investment — all play directly to Brookfield’s strengths.

For investors looking for a single holding that captures the AI infrastructure supercycle, the private credit boom, and the global demand for real assets, Brookfield Corp. belongs on the shortlist.Â

Premium content from Motley Fool Stock Advisor Canada

Greetings, Fools! The Stock Advisor Canada team is kicking off 2026 with our newest collection of top stocks to buy this month. These are the five stocks we think are the best opportunity for new money, right now.

A fun mix of opportunities awaits, and we’re as excited as ever to ride through the calendar year ahead by your side.

Foolishly yours,
Iain Butler
Advisor, Stock Advisor Canada

“Best Buys Now” Pick #1:

Coveo Solutions (TSX:CVO)

Coveo Solutions (TSX: CVO) is one of the very few Canadian companies that’s actually in the AI game. It’s renowned for its AI-powered search and relevance platform, which lets organizations to deliver personalized, relevant experiences for their customers and employees at scale.

OK, cool. But what does that actually mean?

If you’ll indulge me a moment … in my opinion, Seinfeld is the greatest show that ever was and maybe ever will be.

A scene from Seinfeld comes to mind as we try to digest the words above.

In the scene, Kramer is explaining to Jerry how he got a deal on a stereo system that was damaged, and he suggests that Jerry could “write it off.” Here’s the relevant portion of the dialogue between the two:

Jerry: “Write it off? Do you even know what a write-off is?”

Kramer: “No … but they do. And they’re the ones writing it off.”

For our purposes:

You: “AI-Relevance Platform? Iain, do you even know what an AI-Relevance Platform is?”

Me: “Barely … but they do. And they’re the ones that are using the AI-Relevance Platform.”

“They” in this case is the extensive list of customer relationships that Coveo has built — a collection that reads as a who’s who when it comes to the technology world and beyond.

And the company just gained a huge new customer.

Prior to the holiday break, the company announced a new partnership with the Government of Canada that will incorporate its AI-centric offering. Financial terms were not revealed, but heck, when’s the last time the Canadian government didn’t overspend?!?

Investors who do their research before buying Coveo will notice that the stock got kneecapped back in October after the company released quarterly results. By my calculations, that was a result of an entirely insignificant loss of business. Because of it, the market seemingly (and ignorantly) concluded that Coveo was broken. And if nothing else, the recently announced deal with the Government of Canada indicates that this just isn’t the case.

Though Coveo is at the higher end of the risk/reward spectrum largely because the road ahead for all things AI is entirely opaque, we remain of the opinion that it’s a risk/reward situation worth pursuing in 2026.

Premium content from Motley Fool Stock Advisor Canada

The season for a lot of things is upon us, with many investors taking a look ahead to the coming year. But if experience has taught me anything, it’s that making short-term predictions is a waste of everyone’s time. After all, nobody knows the specifics of what the future holds.

But everyone should know that they will rhyme with the generalities of the past.

This means 2025 has set Canadian investors up very nicely for the road ahead. The reason being (while gold in Canada and the sphere of influence surrounding “AI” in the U.S. have carried the narrative) somewhat behind the scenes, a whole bunch of high-quality companies have become nicely cheaper than they were to start the year. Though relatively buried on Page 12, so to speak, multiple contraction has been another prevalent theme over the past 12 months.

History suggests buying a company for 20 times earnings is better than buying it for 40 times earnings, for instance.

And it’s our opinion that we’re going to thank 2025 for these opportunities at some point down the road.

For now, we have the opportunity to share some of our very favourite companies that are trading at very favourable prices.

Enjoy!

Foolishly yours,
Iain Butler
Advisor, Stock Advisor Canada

“Best Buys Now” Pick #1:

FirstService (TSX:FSV)

FirstService (TSX: FSV) is a prime example of the “multiple contraction” dynamic I explained above.

FirstService is in the upper echelon of our favourite companies when it comes to business quality, but we haven’t talked about it much because it’s always felt richly valued.

We really started watching FirstService back in 2017. Since then, the company has traded for more than 30 times forward earnings. Sometimes for much more. Today, the business can be had for about 25 times. This is more of a relatively cheap situation than an absolute one, but simply put, this business very rarely goes on sale.

Oh, and just what is this business?

FirstService is a North American leader in essential outsourced property services, operating through two main divisions:

FirstService Residential: North America’s largest manager of residential communities (condominiums, co-operatives, homeowner associations, etc.), managing over 9,000 communities representing more than 4.5 million residents across 25 U.S. states and three Canadian provinces.

FirstService Brands: One of North America’s largest providers of essential property services delivered through both company-owned operations and franchise systems, including brands such as First Onsite Restoration (commercial property restoration), Paul Davis Restoration, Roofing Corp of America, Century Fire Protection, California Closets, CertaPro Painters, Floor Coverings International, and Pillar to Post Home Inspectors.

The commonality between these two business lines is that they are both focused on recurring revenue streams from essential property services that are required regardless of economic conditions.

To be sure, you’re unlikely to win anyone over if you mention FirstService at a holiday gathering in the weeks ahead. But with a valuation window open, you’ll almost assuredly get the last laugh a decade from now as this business grows reliably and cranks out profitable year after profitable year.

Premium content from Motley Fool Stock Advisor Canada

Amazingly, we’re coming into the home stretch for calendar year 2025. Time flies, and all that stuff.

The stock market in 2025 has been a story of haves and have-nots — a dynamic that surprisingly exists in both the Canadian and U.S. markets.

Gold has driven the Canadian market, while the “Mag 7” is responsible for the bulk of U.S. market gains.

Looking under the hood, the S&P/TSX Composite was up 22.4% year to date as of November 3.

But 121 companies (out of 211), or 57% of index constituents, have underperformed the market. Almost one in four had booked a negative return since the calendar turned.

The situation is more dramatic in the United States. The S&P 500 was up 16.5% year to date on November 3. Strikingly, 360 companies — that’s 72% of the index — have underperformed that bogey. And 45% of the companies in the index had booked a negative return for the year so far — almost half of them!

Now, to fully flesh this out, we’d want to look at how these figures compare to the rest of market history, but that goes beyond what I’m trying to get at.

You see, suffice to say, what we’ve been dealing with is what’s known as a lack of market breadth. A few corners of the market where the sun has been shining have done very well. But that sunshine has been relegated to a select few corners. Cloud cover has been locked in elsewhere, to the detriment of stock prices.

Where this leaves us is that even though from a business standpoint many of the companies we love have performed very nicely, multiple contraction has been rampant.

And while this is the kind of scenario that’s annoyingly painful in the moment, it’s actually very well received with a longer-term outlook in mind. After all, buying a company at 40 times earnings, for instance, and buying that same company at 25 times earnings generates two very different outcomes — one better than the other.

We’ve come upon a lot of companies trading at a metaphorical 40 times earnings in recent years. 2025 has kindly turned many of them into 25 times earnings situations.

Now, you’re about to meet a few of our favourite businesses that haven’t appeared this ripe for the picking in quite some time.

Thanks, 2025!

Foolishly yours,
Iain Butler
Advisor, Stock Advisor Canada

Intact Financial (TSX:IFC) is one of Canada’s best stocks, though seldom does it provide us the opportunity to boldly proclaim, “Buy Intact, now!”

The reason being, the stock price has been on a nearly constant upward trajectory since we starting looking at it. Not that there’s really been a bad time to pick up shares of Intact. It’s just that we Fools are wired to pound the table on a company like this during a pullback.

Consider Intact’s record of growing book value per share. Canada’s largest property and casualty insurer has grown this figure at ~10% per year since we started watching it, and given the consistency with which it’s accomplished this rate, we think it serves as a solid guess of what’s to come.

Tack on a dividend yield of 2% at the current payout — which we expect to grow — and you’re looking at a tidy baseline return of 12% or so from this company.

Where the total return situation has given us pause in the past is when Intact’s multiple trades north of 2.5 times book value. As recently as May 2025, this multiple stood as high as 3.25 times, but thanks to the broadly experienced multiple contraction I mentioned above, we’re back to being asked to pay about 2.6 times book value for Intact today.

While multiple expansion from here fits more in the nice-to-have category than something we’d expect, we’re still looking at a very high-quality company that at least shouldn’t have a multiple-related headwind combating the underlying company growth Intact is bound to achieve.

If you’re looking to sleep well, buy some shares of Intact at the current price and tuck them under your pillow. The longer they remain there, the better.

Premium content from Motley Fool Stock Advisor Canada

Dear fellow Fools,

The third quarter of 2025 is in the books, and largely, North American stock markets have provided more fun than not this calendar year —especially for those who didn’t run for the hills in the opening months. Tariff uncertainty caused a bumpy beginning, but as is so often the case, the market has shrugged off the concern that existed.

To provide perspective on the existing market environment, Motley Fool CEO and co-founder, Tom Gardner, has taken to providing a quarterly update. Highlights from the most recent edition follow:

AVOID SPECULATION IN HIGH VALUATION MARKETS: Investors should avoid speculative behaviour — like options trading, leveraged margin, buying low-priced stocks under $10, and aggressive bets — especially after markets have had a rapid run-up, such as the S&P 500 being up 35% since mid-April. This is the time to reduce risk, not increase it.

UNDERSTAND MARKET EUPHORIA AND HISTORICAL CONTEXT: Current market valuations are at or near historic peaks, with the S&P 500 over 25 times earnings and NASDAQ companies at 6.5 times sales — levels rarely seen in the last 25 years. History shows these periods often precede heightened volatility and lower future returns, so long-term investors should take heed.

MATCH PORTFOLIO RISK TO LIFE CIRCUMSTANCES: Investors should align their investing stance — cautious, moderate, or aggressive — with their financial situation, including income stability, time horizon, and emotional tolerance for losses. Those with shorter horizons, income uncertainty, or unease about drawdowns should lean towards more cautious investments.

SHIFT TOWARD LOWER RISK AS VALUATIONS RISE: Regardless of current risk profile, individual long-term investors are advised to move one step lower on the risk spectrum given today’s high market valuations — so aggressive investors move to moderate, moderate to cautious, etc. — to better manage downside risk if markets decline.

PRESERVE EQUITY EXPOSURE AND FOCUS ON QUALITY: Though equities remain the best long-term asset class, investors should avoid heavy speculative moves and instead focus on companies with strong balance sheets and business stability, maintaining a list of high-quality companies to buy during market volatility.

Now, while that may read as somewhat of a “warning,” I might add that one of the takeaways should be that the investing journey is filled with nuance. In addition, it’s a highly … HIGHLY … personal pursuit. No two life circumstances are the same, and what works for some does not necessarily work for others.

Furthermore, the overlay to Tom’s points that must be kept front and centre at all times is that over the long term, investing in high-quality businesses, ideally at attractive valuations, is a proven route to investing success. Full stop.

Ebbs and flows, though, are inevitable. But just as we’ve seen in 2025, being caught off guard or shaken by an ebb or a flow can be hugely detrimental to one’s financial health.

To be sure, Tom’s somewhat cautionary tone is warranted. But caution is always warranted when it comes to investing. After all, nobody has a crystal ball.

It’s with this cautionary tone in mind, though, that we bring you five durable businesses that we believe are ripe to buy right now — all of which are well-suited for whatever the markets throw our collective way.

Foolishly yours,
Iain Butler
Advisor, Stock Advisor Canada

“Best Buys Now” Pick #1:

Brookfield Infrastructure Partners (TSX:BIP.UN)

Most of my days are spent in the home office, cruising for information and pecking away at the keyboard. A recent Thursday was not one of those days.

What began with evening plans to take in the Blue Jays/Red Sox live quickly morphed into much more when I learned that Brookfield was hosting its Toronto investor day that same afternoon. So, a full day in Toronto, it was. I even rode the subway for the first time in years!

The overarching message from the Brookfield event is that the empire is very well positioned to be a massive winner if the projected buildout of AI-related infrastructure comes even close to what’s currently forecasted.

We’ll highlight Brookfield Infrastructure Partners (TSX:BIP.UN) here, but as a bonus of sorts, a similar story can be told for Brookfield Renewables (TSX: BEP.UN). The same goes for Brookfield Corporation (TSX: BN), which provides exposure to both. Â

There’s much more to this situation than just AI, but as it pertains to that theme specifically, BIP is very well-positioned as a go-to beneficiary of the unprecedented amount of capital that’s to be hurled towards the digitalization trend. A trend that BIP, and other Brookfield affiliates, have been riding since the last time I attended one of these investor days live several years ago.

While the hyperscalers have the capital, they don’t have the wherewithal to actually build out the physical footprint. BIP is one of the few — on the planet — that does have the wherewithal. Currently, the company has seven “AI Factories” under development, which include six gigawatts of compute capacity and $200 billion in expected capital deployment. Figures that have room to grow, in the near term, let alone the decades to come.

We hear about NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA). We hear about Oracle (NYSE: ORCL). And so on. We don’t hear as much, though, about the picks-and-shovels contributors to the AI theme. Yet, as anyone with a working knowledge of the California gold rush knows, that’s where the money tends to be made in these situations. BIP and BEP offer that pick-and-shovel exposure to a secular theme still in the very early innings.

Here are five Foolish stocks we think are smart buys today and will shine into the future.

“Best Buys Now” Pick #1:

Tourmaline Oil (TSX:TOU)

Oil is in the name, but Tourmaline Oil (TSX:TOU) is much more about natural gas and natural gas liquids. So it doesn’t always quite move in sync with its oilier peers in the energy patch, and it is more tied to the swings of the natural gas market.

Natural gas is currently in the doldrums, and Tourmaline is particularly out of favour with investors because of the production expansion plan it recently announced to take advantage of export opportunities on the West Coast. It is an expensive plan, but Tourmaline, which has a sparkling balance sheet, can afford it, and the long-term benefits look worth the cost and effort.

Tourmaline’s plan calls for its production to increase to 850,000 BOEPD (barrels of oil equivalent per day) by 2031 from its current production level of 640,000. The cost of the expansion is capital expenditures of $2.6 to $2.9 billion per year from now through 2031. When complete, maintenance capital expenditures are expected to be roughly $2.5 billion annually.

Free cash flow under the expansion program is expected to also increase from $755 million this year to nearly $3 billion by 2031. Under the expansion program, its debt would decrease from $2.1 billion at year end 2025 and become a $5.9 billion cash surplus at the end. Of course, that assumes no special dividends, which seems unlikely given the company currently has a long history of paying special dividends and just $1.6 billion of debt today.

Here’s the best part: All these assumptions are based on current strip pricing through 2026 and then US$3 AECO natural gas pricing and $65 oil from there forward. In other words, there’s no assumption that pricing will improve in the next five years or beyond.

I think that’s a conservative plan. I think that’s also exactly how a five-year plan should be built. Recent history says that there is likely to be a period (or maybe two) of higher pricing, but that the price will likely fall back to this level. So, when looking at the total period and beyond, it seems likely Tourmaline will generate more cash flow at some point. We just don’t know when.

Tourmaline’s current market cap is $22.8 billion, which puts it at nearly 30 times this year’s expected free cash flow, about 14 times its average free cash flow of the last four years, and 7.6 times its projected 2031 free cash flow.

To me, it looks like investors are overweighting the next year or two of results and ignoring that Tourmaline is the gold-star company in the industry and the long-term cash flow generation from the plan. Investors are also seemingly ignoring the possibility of higher energy prices at some undetermined time in the future. I’m more than happy to take the other side of that bet.

Premium content from Motley Fool Stock Advisor Canada

AI is the biggest technological breakthrough of the last 20 years.

But there’s one thing standing in the way of AI’s future: energy.

AI energy consumption is expected to double by 2026. The data centres that enable artificial intelligence are beginning to grow so large that the energy grid is struggling to keep up. Simply training an AI data model uses more energy than 100 households do in one year. Next-generation AI data centres will need as much power as some cities. Moreover, power has to be available 24/7.

Canadian businesses are stepping up to power the breakthrough. These three companies could be set to capture significant profits powering the AI Revolution – and serious gains for investors.

AI Revolution Stock #1:

Brookfield Renewable Partners (TSX: BEP.UN)

Brookfield Renewable Partners (TXS: BEP.UN) is a global leader in the renewable energy sector, operating a diversified portfolio that spans across hydroelectric, wind, solar, nuclear power, and energy storage facilities. This extensive reach not only underscores its commitment to sustainable energy but also positions Brookfield Renewable as a key contributor to AI revolution.

An important aspect of Brookfield Renewable’s identity and strategy is its close relationship with its parent company, Brookfield Corporation (TSX:BN). This connection provides the renewable energy giant with several strategic advantages including financial strength, operational expertise, and an expansive global network. With the highest credit rating in its industry, Brookfield Renewable’s low cost of capital translates into higher profitability and makes projects economically attractive to Brookfield that might not be as attractive to a competitor.

Brookfield Renewable is well-positioned to become a preferred energy provider to the AI industry. The company currently has 43 gigawatts of renewable power operating capacity and an astounding 227 gigawatt development pipeline. Ninety percent of that development pipeline is located in the top 10 global data center markets.

In May 2024, Brookfield Renewable and Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) announced a first-of-its-kind framework agreement to support Microsoft’s growing energy demands by developing new renewable energy resources. As Brookfield shared in the press release announcing the deal

The agreement provides a pathway for Brookfield to deliver over 10.5 gigawatts of new renewable energy capacity between 2026 and 2030 in the U.S. and Europe. The agreement includes the potential to increase its scope to deliver additional renewable energy capacity within the U.S. and Europe, and beyond to Asia-Pacific, India, and Latin America, and provides an incentive for Brookfield to build a large portfolio of new renewable energy projects over the coming years.

Notably, the agreement will include more than just wind and solar, contemplating “new or impactful carbon free energy generation technologies” (nuclear power, perhaps?). To put this news in perspective, this deal is almost eight times larger than the next biggest corporate power purchase agreement ever signed.

Speaking of nuclear power, another underappreciated growth lever for Brookfield Renewable is its 51% stake in Westinghouse Electric Company. Westinghouse is a global leader in nuclear power plant design, maintenance, and fuel supply, with a presence in more than half of the world’s nuclear reactors. As countries and corporations increasingly turn to nuclear energy to meet ambitious decarbonization and 24/7 energy reliability goals, Westinghouse stands to benefit from a revival of nuclear power as a safe, zero-carbon baseload resource. Brookfield Renewable’s involvement in Westinghouse gives the company a unique seat at the table as nuclear enjoys renewed attention from policymakers and investors seeking proven ways to support the world’s growing electrification needs—especially as AI, data centers, and electrified industries drive surging round-the-clock demand. With this diversified approach, Brookfield Renewable is well positioned to capture AI power opportunities across the energy spectrum.

With the coming growth in AI power demand and big tech companies like Microsoft seeking out clean energy to meet that demand, Brookfield has a secular tailwind at its back that doesn’t appear likely to slow anytime soon. Now could be a great time to invest in this global leader in clean energy generation and development.

Premium content from Motley Fool Stock Advisor Canada

Fellow Fools,

The headlines have been tough to tune out this year, from Donald Trump’s tariffs to warfare in Ukraine and Iran, stubborn inflation and a Canadian federal election.

Against that backdrop, though, the stock market has marched higher. In fact, Canada’s benchmark S&P/TSX Composite Index finished at record highs Monday.

When markets hit new highs, investors often ask: “Isn’t this a bad time to invest?”

But we Fools at Stock Advisor Canada see things differently. Long-term investing is less about timing the next headline and more about positioning yourself for the world that emerges a decade from now.

Here are a few things to consider doing when headlines rage, volatility strikes, and, yes, when we’re investing at all-time highs.

1. Find Opportunity in Uncertainty

Tariffs will roil trade, wars will disrupt supply chains, and inflation may stubbornly persist. These are textbook conditions that reward patience and perspective. Canada’s resource and energy sectors, with their global reach and pricing power, are well‑positioned. And innovation remains alive here — from fintech to nuclear power, Canada’s best companies are building durable value.

2. Focus on What You Can Control

You can’t control geopolitics, but you can control how you build your portfolio. Businesses with strong balance sheets, good governance, and pricing power tend to outperform over time. We like the companies on this month’s Best Buys Now list for their long‑term trajectory.

3. Embrace Volatility as the Price of Admission

If the recent all‑time high makes you nervous, you’re not alone. Markets climb a “wall of worry.” As long as people participate in markets, markets will be volatile. But in the real world, people are also constantly working to create better technologies, create new products, and find the next big thing. That drive to innovate is what continues to power the market higher, even if it doesn’t make the headlines.

4. Anchor Your Horizon in Decades

If you’re investing for retirement, today’s political headlines will likely be just a chapter in your story. The best stocks are the ones you never feel compelled to sell because they keep evolving and innovating.

5. Keep Learning and Stay Curious

In a noisy world, the investor who studies, asks questions, and stays engaged gains an edge. Read quarterly reports, pursue diverse sectors, and ask what problems companies are solving. It’ll make you smarter, happier, and richer.

The next time you’re thinking, “Is now the right time to invest?” or “Shouldn’t I sell right now?”, consider another question instead: “Am I building a portfolio that reflects my best ideas, and my best, realistic vision for the future?” If yes, you have reason to be bullish—even when concern abounds. If not, let this be your invitation to reassess, reposition, and recommit.

Don’t let short‑term fear knock you off the path to long‑term prosperity. Markets won’t make all-time highs every day, and every headline won’t be positive. But over decades, economies grow, innovation wins, and disciplined investors are rewarded. Here are five stocks we think will shine.

Foolishly yours,
Nick Sciple
Senior analyst, Motley Fool Canada

“Best Buys Now” Pick #1:

Pulse Seismic (TSX:PSD)

This small-cap owner of seismic data has been the Rodney Dangerfield of stocks. For years, Pulse Seismic (TSX:PSD) went about executing well — without getting any respect. The downturn in commodity prices certainly obscured the company’s improved earning potential for a while. But it appears that investors are starting to take notice of the results Pulse is generating for shareholders.Â

Over the past year, the stock is up 37%, but total returns are much higher than that. So far in 2025, Pulse has paid out total dividends of $0.2325. That includes two quarterly dividends and a $0.20 special dividend. With no debt on the balance sheet and exceptionally low operating costs, these special dividends are becoming very … well, almost regular. Here’s a list of special dividends since 2021 (note: that’s the year Pulse paid off all its debt from a timely acquisition that roughly doubled the size of its seismic library):

Special Dividends

$0.04 paid November 29, 2021

$0.15 paid August 22, 2023

$0.20 paid January 8, 2024

$0.05 pad August 21, 2024

$0.20 paid March 13, 2025

On April 22, 2025, Pulse boosted its regular quarterly dividend by 17% to $0.0175 per share. This higher quarterly dividend still only costs Pulse $889,000.

Pulse ended March with $14.3 million in cash on its balance sheet and no debt. On June 12, Pulse announced another sale of its seismic data for $13.5 million. That will leave Pulse’s balance sheet stuffed with cash again. Based on its current share count of 50,755,057 shares, a $0.20 special dividend will only cost Pulse just over $10 million. Pulse could do two of these and still be in fine shape.

Pulse’s management team has done everything right over the past few years, and shareholders have been rewarded. Pulse is in a position where business results will continue to drive stock results. The recent performance and announcement of that $13.5 million sale helped land Pulse on this month’s Best Buy list.

We fully expect more special dividends in the future, which will likely put yields well above 10%, based on the current prices. Keep in mind that Pulse’s future sales remain impossible to predict. We like that management doesn’t even attempt to do so. As Warren Buffett once quipped, “Charlie (Munger) and I would much rather earn a lumpy 15% over time than a smooth 12%.” Lately, Pulse has been doing much better than that.

Premium content from Motley Fool Stock Advisor Canada

We here at Motley Fool Stock Advisor Canada believe investors should own at least 15 stocks. Our yearly list of “Starter Stocks” is our attempt to answer a simple question: “Where do I go first?”

If you’re a new investor, we suggest you pick three Starter Stocks that interest you and use them to help build out a portfolio of at least 15 stocks. And if you’ve been investing for a while and already own some companies, we think these stocks have what it takes to strengthen any portfolio.

You should feel comfortable holding these stocks for the long haul; not only do they have the strength to ride out downturns, but they’re also built for powerful growth.

Stock Advisor “Starter Stock” Pick #1:

Constellation Software (TSX:CSU)

When it comes to naming Canada’s most successful technology companies, the list is short. And it’s safe to say, most would not place Constellation Software (TSX:CSU) on this list. After all, it’s hardly a household name.

However, the ~1,006% return that this company has generated for its investors over the past decade (as of July 2025) is the stuff that investing dreams are made of. And while we don’t expect that kind of return in the decade ahead because of the law of large numbers, the formula for success that’s driven Constellation’s growth remains in play. We expect it will prove every bit as effective as it has.

Constellation is a consolidator in the global technology industry. Buying underappreciated, niche software companies and providing them with the resources required to improve operations and grow. Capital allocation is key to this formula, and we view Constellation’s founder, Mark Leonard, and the team around him as second to none on this front.

This is a prime example of a company that one can comfortably build to a sizable allocation within their portfolio and just leave it alone. It’s to the point that the less you think about it, the better, making it a perfect fit for what we believe qualifies as a Starter Stock.

Premium content from Motley Fool Canada

Fellow Fools,

There’s a groundswell of change happening across our nation, as Canadians unite in response to challenges posed by our southern neighbors.

Our government is taking decisive steps to protect and assert our economic interests, from imposing counter-tariffs to exploring alternative energy alliances. And Ottawa’s strategic actions are echoed by the everyday decisions of Canadians like you.

Recent surveys reveal that 85% of Canadians are ready to swap U.S. consumer goods for homegrown alternatives. And even though Canadians spent more than US$20 billion traveling to the U.S. last year, a recent survey revealed that nearly half of Canadians would rather alter their travel plans than visit the United States.

But there’s more we can do, and that’s where your savvy investment choice comes into play. We collectively hold more than US$1.5 trillion in U.S. equities, making Canada the largest foreign investor in the U.S. market. Imagine the power of redirecting even a fraction of this capital back to Canadian ventures — it’s substantial enough to make a significant impact.

In our new report, “Made in Canada: 5 Homegrown Stocks Ready for the ‘Buy Local’ Revolution,” we spotlight five exceptional Canadian stocks that merit your attention. These companies not only drive their profits back to Canada, fueling our economy, but we also think they can outperform the market. This one-time, non-recurring purchase includes five Canadian investment ideas and is valued at $49 — though we’re sharing a bonus idea here FREE.

Buying any of these stocks will help propel Canada’s economic resilience. It’s something we can all do together, one smart investment at a time.

Foolishly yours,
Nick Sciple,
Senior analyst, Stock Advisor Canada

PS: The report features swaps for popular U.S. stocks like Nike and Walmart — and keeps your investing dollars at home.

“Made in Canada” Pick #1: Instead of Berkshire Hathaway, Buy …

Fairfax Financial (TSX: FFH)

Billionaire Prem Watsa is often described as “the Warren Buffett of Canada,” and his company, Fairfax Financial (TSX:FFH), is indeed a lot like Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway. Fairfax is a holding company that owns a number of companies — mostly insurance businesses.

Fairfax has two main ways of making money:

Insurance. The company had record underwriting profits of $1.8 billion on record gross premiums of $33 billion in 2024.

Investments. Fairfax’s investment portfolio has grown from $39.3 billion in 2017 to $67.4 billion in 2024. Fairfax generated record interest and dividend income of $2.5 billion in 2024. (That’s an increase in interest and dividend income of 316% since 2017.)

The best part for long-term shareholders is that those increased earnings have been spread out over fewer shares. Fairfax has reduced the number of shares available by almost 22% over seven years, from 27.8 million in 2017 to 21.7 million in 2024, which has returned capital to investors. Watsa currently owns more than 9% of the outstanding stock.

Despite Fairfax’s stock gaining 48% in 2024 (excluding the $15 per share dividend), it remains reasonably priced today at 1.2 times its book value per share. And when you combine insurance profits and timely investments, the business should be able safely earn around $4 billion per year. That means the company is trading below 10 times earnings. As a bonus, Fairfax’s global insurance operation and investment shop face little impact from the escalating tariff wars.

The Motley Fool Canada team has identified what they believe are the top 10 TSX stocks for 2026… and Fairfax Financial wasn’t one of them. The 10 stocks that made the cut could potentially produce monster returns in the coming years.

Consider MercadoLibre, which we first recommended on January 8, 2014 … if you invested $1,000 in the “eBay of Latin America” at the time of our recommendation, you’d have over $16,000!*

Now, it’s worth noting Stock Advisor Canada’s total average return is 87%* – a market-crushing outperformance compared to 76%* for the S&P/TSX Composite Index. Don’t miss out on our top 10 stocks, available when you join our mailing list!
