Have you ever watched a stock when it was just a small company and thought that it would become big? You waited and waited, and suddenly, when you least expected it, that stock exploded. You gritted your teeth, saying you knew it was going to be a big hit. But alas! It’s too late, and now the windfall returns have already been diluted.

No one has it easy in business. One has to burn the midnight oil, take risks, and bear losses to become an outlier.

Stocks that nobody’s talking about

Ballard Power Systems

Until 2025, nobody was talking about Ballard Power Systems (TSX:BLDP). Because its hydrogen fuel cell technology was expensive, and the company was funding its losses. Its technology helps buses, trains, and trucks run on hydrogen fuel cells, which are environmentally friendly but not pocket-friendly. The only reason it got orders is due to the green subsidies of various European and American companies, and the deep pockets of its Chinese joint venture partner, Weichai Power.

However, you know that hydrogen cells are the future. They can solve the ever-growing problem of transport emissions and reduce dependence on oil and natural gas. Imagine having an end-to-end logistics fleet of hydrogen fuel cells, with ships transporting the goods, trucks carrying them via roadways, and stationary power powering the warehouse. E-commerce and other supply chain operations could significantly lower their emissions.

After years of research, Ballard Power Systems has come quite close to making this technology commercially viable. The company has reported gross profit in 2025, sustained it in the first quarter of 2026, and is on track to turn positive cash flow by 2027. Whether it will succeed or not is difficult to tell.

Will this technology be widely adopted? Will it be safe and commercially feasible? All these questions pose a challenge and could keep the stock volatile. The talks die down whenever a business challenge comes up, and the stock price falls.

Hive stock

Hive Digital Technologies (TSXV:HIVE) is tapping into the artificial intelligence (AI) data centre opportunity by converting its Tier-1 Bitcoin mining data centre to Tier-3 AI data centres. Tier-3 data centers cost three times as much as Tier 1, have 40% more cooling needs, and take longer to become operational. Tapping this opportunity requires Hive to secure capital that can give it the flexibility to take risks. Thus, it is not using debt. AI infrastructure is yet to generate sizeable and guaranteed returns for debt financing. Instead, Hive is tapping the stock exchange in Colombia, Canada, Germany, and the US Nasdaq. This has diluted its equity, because of which the stock has failed to pick up momentum.

The tipping point for the stocks – Until they explode higher

The above two stocks fail to sustain the limelight for the long term because of the challenges and risks that come with new business. However, they have what it takes to explode higher. When that tipping point will come is difficult to tell.

For Ballard Power Systems, the tipping point will come when hydrogen fuel cell technology beats the diesel powertrain in cost of ownership. When that happens, its stock will rise exponentially, making you a millionaire in a few years.

For Hive, the tipping point will come when it onboards a hyperscaler customer, like Google or Amazon. Celestica’s stock exploded after it onboarded a hyperscaler customer. Whether Hive will monetize its AI data centres is worth watching.

Despite a worse-than-expected domestic jobs report and the escalating U.S.-Iran conflict, Canadian stocks staged a recovery on Friday as strong U.S. non-farm employment change figures and largely positive corporate results helped improve investor sentiment. The S&P/TSX Composite Index climbed by 221 points, or 0.7%, to settle at 34,078.

Despite weakness in many key sectors, such as technology, real estate, and energy, gains in mining, consumer cyclical, and financial stocks helped the broader TSX benchmark finish the day on a positive note.

Notably, the Canadian market benchmark concluded the week with a 0.6% gain overall, ending its two-week losing streak.

Top TSX Composite movers and active stocks

B2Gold, Teck Resources, First Quantum Minerals, and BlackBerry were the top-performing TSX stocks for the day, with each climbing by at least 5.8%.

Wheaton Precious Metals (TSX:WPM) was also among the day’s top gainers on the Toronto Stock Exchange, after its shares rose more than 5% to $189.94 apiece. This rally in WPM stock came a day after the Vancouver-based precious metals streaming firm posted record financial results for the first quarter of 2026, including a 92% year-over-year jump in its revenue to US$901 million and a 129% surge in net earnings to US$582 million.

Investors also appeared encouraged by Wheaton’s strong operating cash flow, higher attributable production, and its aggressive expansion strategy highlighted by the massive US$4.3 billion Antamina streaming deal with BHP Group. After the recent rally, WPM stock has jumped 65% over the last year.

However, Energy Fuels, Brookfield Business Holdings, Exchange Income, and Maple Leaf Foods slid by at least 5.4% each, making them the session’s worst-performing TSX stocks.

Based on their daily trade volume, Enbridge, Telus, BlackBerry, Baytex Energy, and B2Gold were the five most active stocks on the exchange.

TSX today

Oil and gold prices were slightly lower in early trading on Monday, while silver and copper prices trended higher. These mixed commodity price movements could lead to a cautious and potentially choppy opening for the resource-heavy TSX index today.

Canadian investors will likely remain focused on the latest developments in the Middle East after U.S. president Donald Trump rejected Iran’s latest response to Washington’s proposed framework to end the war, calling it “totally unacceptable.” Reports suggest Iran’s proposal included demands linked to ending the naval blockade, compensation for war damage, and recognition of its authority over the Strait of Hormuz.

While no major domestic economic releases are due, several TSX-listed companies like Exchange Income, CT REIT, K92 Mining, and Barrick Mining will release their latest earnings reports today, which could keep their stocks in focus throughout the session.

The Canadian stock market stayed on a rollercoaster ride on Thursday as investors reacted to volatile commodity prices, fresh corporate earnings, and ongoing geopolitical uncertainty linked to U.S.-Iran negotiations. A day after surging by 1.2%, the S&P/TSX Composite Index gave up 125 points, or 0.4%, to settle at 33,857 — marking its ninth decline in the last 11 sessions.

Despite strength in some key market sectors like technology and healthcare, weakness in mining, energy, and industrial stocks dragged down the TSX benchmark.

Top TSX Composite movers and active stocks

Nutrien (TSX:NTR) was the worst-performing TSX stock for the day, as it plunged by 7.5% to $93.29 per share. This selloff in NTR stock came after the Saskatoon-headquartered crop inputs and services firm reported its first-quarter 2026 earnings. While the company posted a sharp year-over-year (YoY) increase in its adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) and record potash sales volumes, investors appeared concerned about its weak bottom-line profitability, higher share-based compensation expenses, and continued pressure in its phosphate business.

Notably, Nutrien’s net earnings came in at just US$139 million, despite revenue jumping 19% YoY to US$6 billion. Nevertheless, Nutrien reaffirmed its full-year guidance, citing strong fertilizer demand, tightening global supply conditions, and healthy demand for crop inputs across key markets. The recent selloff trimmed NTR stock’s year-to-date gains to around 10%.

Celestica, Element Fleet Management, and Sprott were also among the day’s bottom performers on the Toronto Stock Exchange as they slipped by at least 6.3% each.

On the brighter side, shares of B2Gold (TSX:BTO) climbed 11% to $6.76 per share after the gold miner reported stronger-than-expected first-quarter results. Its total gold production came in at 237,763 ounces, as all of its operations exceeded expectations, helping the company post lower-than-expected costs and robust free cash flow of US$362 million.

Maple Leaf Foods, Kinaxis, and Endeavour Silver also surged by at least 9% each, making them among the session’s top-performing TSX stocks.

Based on their daily trade volume, B2Gold, Enbridge, Canadian Natural Resources, Whitecap Resources, and Suncor Energy were the five most active stocks on the exchange.

TSX today

Crude oil prices trended lower in early morning trading on Friday, while metals prices across the board climbed higher. Given this backdrop, the resource-heavy TSX index could see slightly positive trading at the open today as gains in mining stocks may help offset continued weakness in the energy sector.

Canadian investors will also monitor fresh developments around the Strait of Hormuz after the U.S. said it intercepted Iranian attacks on three naval ships and responded with strikes on military facilities linked to those attacks. Although U.S. President Donald Trump said the ceasefire remains in effect, his warning of stronger action if Iran does not sign a deal soon could keep energy markets on edge.

More importantly, jobs reports from both sides of the border are scheduled to be released this morning, which could help TSX investors set their expectations around future interest rate decisions and broader economic growth trends.

Even with softer-than-expected U.S. non-farm payroll data, Canadian stocks staged a sharp recovery Wednesday on largely upbeat corporate earnings and hopes for progress in U.S.-Iran negotiations, which led to steep declines in crude oil and lifted metals prices. The S&P/TSX Composite Index climbed by 415 points, or 1.2%, to settle at 33,982 — ending its three-day losing streak.

While some key market sectors like energy, technology, and consumer staples showed weakness, solid intraday gains in real estate and mining stocks helped the broader TSX benchmark rebound strongly.

Top TSX Composite movers and active stocks

Sprott (TSX:SII) surged by nearly 20% to $207.65 per share, making it the top-performing TSX stock for the day. This rally in SII stock came after the precious metals and critical materials-focused asset manager posted strong first-quarter results. Its assets under management rose 9% from the end of 2025 to US$65.1 billion, helped by market value gains and inflows into its exchange-listed products.

Similarly, Sprott’s quarterly net profit more than doubled to US$29.2 million from US$12 million a year ago, while adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) also jumped over 160% to US$57.9 million. SII stock rallied as investors cheered Sprott’s strong earnings growth, higher assets under management, and solid demand for its critical materials investment products. So far in 2026, the stock has now risen 55%.

Americas Gold and Silver, SSR Mining, and IAMGOLD were also among the day’s top gainers on the Toronto Stock Exchange, with each jumping by at least 14%.

On the flip side, shares of Vermilion Energy (TSX:VET) dived by nearly 13% after the Calgary-based energy producer reported a quarterly net loss of $146 million, mainly due to a large unrealized loss on derivative instruments linked to rising oil and European gas prices during the quarter.

Despite posting strong operational results, reducing net debt, and generating $98 million in free cash flow, investors appeared concerned about Vermilion Energy’s sizeable hedging-related losses and softer year-over-year fund flows from operations.

iA Financial, Stella-Jones, and Suncor Energy also fell by at least 7.5% each, making them among the session’s worst-performing TSX stocks.

According to exchange trading data, Telus, Enbridge, B2Gold, ARC Resources, and Cenovus Energy were the day’s most active stocks in Canada.

Commodity prices were largely mixed in early trading on Thursday, pointing to a flat open for the resource-heavy main TSX index today.

Canadian equities trended lower for the third consecutive session on Tuesday as escalating Middle East tensions intensified after Iran launched missile and drone attacks on the UAE, while also targeting ships near the Strait of Hormuz. The S&P/TSX Composite Index slipped by 72 points, or 0.2%, to 33,567 — posting its eighth daily decline out of the previous nine days.

An intraday sharp recovery in gold and copper prices helped mining stocks climb, and consumer and financial shares also performed well, but steep declines in tech stocks dragged on the broader TSX index.

Shopify (TSX:SHOP) tanked by nearly 16% to $146.28 per share, making it the worst-performing TSX stock of the day and weighing heavily on the tech sector. This selloff in SHOP stock came after the Ottawa-based e-commerce platform giant issued second-quarter guidance that appeared to disappoint investors despite reporting strong first-quarter results.

While Shopify’s revenue jumped by 34% year over year in the first quarter and gross merchandise volume exceeded US$100 billion, investors seemed concerned about its outlook for second-quarter revenue growth in the “high-20s percentage range” and continued elevated spending levels. Canadian stocks started the new week on a negative note as renewed Middle East conflict after fresh U.S. and Iranian strikes in the Strait of Hormuz rattled global markets, driving oil and gas prices higher. The S&P/TSX Composite Index plunged by 252 points, or 0.7%, to settle at 33,639 — marking its second straight daily decline.

A day after jumping 1.9%, the S&P/TSX Composite Index fell by 73 points, or 0.2%, to settle at 33,891 — concluding the week with a minor decline of 13 points.

Canadian stocks staged a strong recovery on the final trading session of April as investors showed confidence in largely better-than-expected corporate earnings, even as commodity prices remained volatile amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. After falling for five consecutive sessions, the S&P/TSX Composite Index jumped by 646 points, or 1.9%, on Thursday to settle at 33,964 — wiping out its weekly losses and ending the month up 3.7%.

While all key market sectors ended the session in the green, the TSX rally was mainly led by solid gains in consumer cyclicals, energy, and industrial stocks.

Top TSX Composite movers and active stocks

Bombardier (TSX:BBD.B) surged by nearly 21% to $288.64 per share, making it the top-performing TSX stock for the day. This rally in Bombardier stock came after the Dorval-based business jet manufacturer reported strong first-quarter results and raised its 2026 free cash flow guidance. In the latest quarter, the company’s revenue rose 5% year over year to US$1.6 billion, while services revenue jumped 25% to US$617 million.

Similarly, Bombardier’s free cash flow improved by US$664 million from a year earlier to US$360 million, and backlog climbed to US$20.3 billion on strong demand for its aircraft. The Canadian stock market fell for the fifth consecutive session on Wednesday as mixed earnings and geopolitical uncertainty kept investors on edge, while both the Bank of Canada (BoC) and the U.S. Federal Reserve kept interest rates steady. The S&P/TSX Composite Index plunged by 266 points, or 0.8%, for the day to settle at 33,318 — marking its lowest closing in three weeks as oil prices continued to soar.

Despite intraday gains in energy stocks, most other key market sectors fell, led primarily by heavy declines in mining, real estate, and utilities.

BoC and U.S. Fed keep rates steady

In its latest policy statement, the BoC said it is closely monitoring the impact of the Middle East conflict and trade-related uncertainty, noting that higher energy prices are lifting near-term inflation but are expected to ease over time.

In the latest quarter, CGI’s revenue climbed 3.3% year over year to $4.16 billion, but constant-currency revenue growth was softer at 1.6%. As a result, its adjusted net profit rose only 0.6% to $483.4 million, while adjusted net earnings margin slipped to 11.6% from 11.9% a year ago. The stock fell as investors focused on the modest organic growth and margin pressure, even though CGI delivered higher earnings per share and strong bookings.

Capital Power, FirstService, and Canadian National Railway were also among the session’s bottom performers on the Toronto Stock Exchange, with each slipping by at least 6%.

On the brighter side, goeasy, Strathcona Resources, Parex Resources, and Cenovus Energy jumped by at least 4.8% each, making them the top-performing TSX stocks for the day.

This surge in oil prices was driven by continued supply disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and limited progress in U.S.-Iran negotiations, where both sides remain divided over key conditions to de-escalate the conflict.
