Canadian stocks staged a recovery on Wednesday as investors reacted to strengthening metals prices and the Bank of Canada’s (BoC) decision to keep its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 2.25%. The S&P/TSX Composite Index climbed by 266 points, or 0.7%, to settle at 36,092 — snapping its three-day losing streak.

Despite weakness in utility and energy stocks, strong gains in most other key market sectors, including mining, financials, and consumer cyclicals, lifted the TSX benchmark.

The BoC keeps interest rate steady

In its latest statement, the Canadian central bank pointed to a broadening recovery in the domestic economy, with second-quarter gross domestic product (GDP) growing by 3.3% and the unemployment rate easing to 6.4% in July.

However, policymakers also highlighted increasing inflation risks from persistently high energy prices and ongoing disruptions to shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. The BoC added that new U.S. tariffs and Canadian counter-tariffs have made the growth outlook more uncertain, even as underlying inflation measures remain close to its 2% target.

However, the company’s same-store fuel volumes fell 1.6% in the United States and 4.3% in Europe and other regions amid softer demand, while merchandise margins narrowed in the U.S. and Canada. These weaker operating trends weighed on ATD stock despite its solid earnings growth.

The Canadian stock market selloff intensified on Tuesday as surging oil and gas prices reignited inflation concerns amid the ongoing escalation in the Middle East, while renewed Canada-U.S. trade tensions further weighed on investor sentiment. Canadian stocks continued to slide for a second consecutive session on Monday as investors remained worried about renewed U.S.-Iran military tensions and the deepening Canada-U.S. trade dispute. As profit-taking continued, the S&P/TSX Composite Index plunged by 283 points, or 0.8%, to settle at 36,270 — registering its biggest single-day decline in nine sessions.

Even as surging crude oil and natural gas prices drove energy stocks higher, sharp declines in other key sectors like mining, technology, and real estate dragged the TSX benchmark down.

Despite recent weakness, the TSX Composite still ended August with a solid 3% gain.

Solid results across all major business lines, including record earnings from its global wealth management and global banking and markets segments, boosted investor confidence.

Energy Fuels, Southern Cross Gold, and Seabridge Gold were also among the day’s top gainers on the Toronto Stock Exchange, with each climbing 5.5%.

In contrast, Imperial Oil, Thomson Reuters, Cenovus Energy, and Bird Construction slipped by at least 3.9% each, making them the worst-performing TSX stocks for the day.

Based on their daily trade volume, Canadian Natural Resources, Cenovus Energy, Enbridge, Scotiabank, and B2Gold were the five most active stocks on the exchange.

TSX today

Crude oil and gold prices fell in early trading on Wednesday, which could pressure the commodity-heavy TSX index at the open today.

This volatility in commodity markets comes as investors continue to weigh escalating U.S.-Iran tensions and the widening Canada-U.S. trade dispute. While China has pushed back against Washington’s expanded sanctions on Iran, Tehran has threatened retaliation and further disruption to key energy routes if pressure intensifies.

Even as ongoing U.S.-Iran tensions and renewed Canada-U.S. trade frictions kept investors cautious, Canadian stocks managed to start the new week on a slightly positive note as strengthening gold prices, easing Treasury bond yields, and hopes of strong bank earnings later in the week boosted investor confidence. The S&P/TSX Composite Index advanced by 94 points, or 0.3%, on Monday to settle at 36,714, narrowing the gap from its all-time highs and extending its rebound for a second straight session.

While consumer cyclical and industrial stocks trended lower amid heightened trade uncertainty, strong intraday gains in other key sectors like mining, real estate, and technology helped the TSX extend its recovery.

Top TSX Composite movers and active stocks

Seabridge Gold, NovaGold Resources, I-80 Gold, and Discovery Mining were the top-performing TSX stocks for the day, as they jumped by at least 4.7% each.

Shares of Thomson Reuters (TSX: TRI) also climbed by 3.3%, making it among the day’s top gainers on the Toronto Stock Exchange. This rally in TRI stock came after the company launched Thomson, its first proprietary large language model developed in-house.

Thomson Reuters invested $40 million to train the model using its proprietary content and expertise, while retaining full ownership and control. The company said early evaluations put Thomson on par with leading frontier models across a range of tasks, with its first deployment planned in CoCounsel Legal. Investors welcomed the launch as another step in Thomson Reuters’s push to expand its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities.

On the flip side, Linamar, Magna International, BRP, and Bombardier were the session’s worst-performing TSX stocks, as they plunged by at least 5.9% each.

Commodity prices across the board fell in early Tuesday trading, which could pressure the resource-heavy main TSX index at the open today.

While no major domestic economic releases are due, Canadian investors may want to keep an eye on the latest U.S. consumer confidence data for August this morning.

As Canadian bank earnings season kicks off today, Bank of Montreal and Scotiabank will announce their latest quarterly results today, which could keep their shares in focus throughout the session.

In addition, Canada-U.S. trade tensions could remain a key driver of market sentiment after U.S. president Donald Trump threatened to raise tariffs on Canadian automobiles, trucks, and auto parts from 25% to 50% starting January 1. This development could keep Canadian auto and manufacturing stocks particularly volatile.

Despite heightened geopolitical tensions and elevated Treasury bond yields, Canadian stocks staged a sharp recovery on Friday as strong gains in metals prices and renewed buying across several key sectors helped lift the broader market. The S&P/TSX Composite Index jumped by 255 points, or 0.7%, to settle at 36,620, marking its biggest single-day percentage gain in 10 sessions.

On the one hand, shares of utility, real estate, and healthcare companies trended lower. On the other hand, a solid intraday rally in mining, consumer cyclical, and industrial stocks fueled broad buying momentum and helped the TSX benchmark trim its weekly losses to 0.3%.

Top TSX Composite movers and active stocks

Denison Mines, Ero Copper, Energy Fuels, and G Mining Ventures were the top-performing TSX stocks for the day, with each jumping by at least 8.6%.

Shares of Canadian Pacific Kansas City (TSX: CP), or CPKC, also trended higher after the railway announced an end to a nearly three-month strike involving about 300 employees across Canada. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers agreed to enter into binding arbitration, ending the strike that began on May 31.

CPKC said the affected employees would return to work beginning Monday morning. The resolution of the prolonged labour dispute eased operational uncertainty and helped lift CP stock. So far in 2026, the stock has risen nearly 32%.

In contrast, Seabridge Gold, Bausch Health, Boyd Group Services, and Canadian Utilities plunged by at least 3.6% each, making them the session’s worst-performing TSX stocks.

Based on their daily trade volume, Enbridge, Canadian Natural Resources, B2Gold, Denison Mines, and Telus were the five most active stocks on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

TSX today

Gold and natural gas prices rose sharply in early Monday trading, while oil prices showed weakness. Given the TSX’s heavy exposure to commodity-linked companies, these mixed trends could lift mining stocks while weighing on energy stocks at the open today.

However, investors may remain cautious after U.S.-Canada trade talks collapsed late Friday, triggering fresh 50% U.S. tariffs on a range of Canadian goods. Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada will respond with matching tariffs from September 8, raising concerns about renewed pressure on trade-sensitive industries and the broader economic outlook.

TSX investors will also monitor Washington’s expected announcement of tougher sanctions on Iran today, which could influence oil prices and global risk sentiment, while keeping market volatility in focus.
