The recovery in Canadian stocks gained steam before going into the long Thanksgiving holiday as rallying metals prices backed mining shares, while significantly worse-than-expected domestic employment change data renewed expectations of a more accommodative monetary policy stance from the Bank of Canada. The S&P/TSX Composite Index surged by 519 points, or 1.5%, on Friday to 35,665 – marking its biggest single-day percentage gain in 25 sessions and reaching its highest closing level so far this month.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index plunged by 608 points, or 1.7%, to 35,042, its lowest closing level since July 20.

Even as select consumer staples and healthcare stocks saw buying, heavy losses in other main sectors like mining, financials, and industrials pressured the TSX benchmark.

The Fed might not ease its policy stance soon

Notably, the latest minutes of the Federal Open Market Committee’s (FOMC) September meeting revealed that most policymakers expect another interest rate hike before the end of 2026. The Canadian stock market continued to climb for the third straight session on Tuesday as strong commodity prices and growing expectations of a more accommodative U.S. Federal Reserve helped keep buying interest alive despite persistent geopolitical and trade risks. The S&P/TSX Composite Index rose by 131 points, or 0.4%, to settle at 35,650, reaching its highest closing level in more than a week.

Nearly all key market sectors except industrials ended the session in green, but the market rally was mainly driven by strong buying in technology, consumer cyclical, and utility stocks.

Top TSX Composite movers and active stocks

ATCO (TSX: ACO.X) jumped by more than 9% to $81.02 per share, making it the top-performing TSX stock for the day. In a big development, ATCO, its subsidiary Canadian Utilities (TSX: CU), and Emera (TSX: EMA) announced a major merger and spin-off deal. ATCO currently controls Canadian Utilities, which houses much of its electricity and natural gas utility business.

Under the deal, Canadian Utilities will combine with Emera to create a much larger utility company with about $72 billion in enterprise value. At the same time, ATCO’s other businesses, including housing and defence services, will be separated into a new publicly traded company called New ATCO. After the transaction, ATCO shareholders will receive shares in both Emera and New ATCO, which likely explains the strong buying in ATCO stock. In contrast, Emera fell nearly 3%, while Canadian Utilities slipped about 2% after the announcement.

Cameco, BlackBerry, and Quebecor were also among the day’s top gainers on the Toronto Stock Exchange, with each climbing by at least 5.3%.

In contrast, West Fraser Timber, Extendicare, Discovery Mining, and DPM Metals fell by at least 3%, making them the session’s worst-performing TSX stocks.

Canadian equities continued to trade positively for the second consecutive session on Monday as a rebound in silver and copper prices, coupled with investors’ growing expectations for a more accommodative U.S. Federal Reserve, helped support broader market sentiment. Despite facing pressures from weaker oil and gold prices, the S&P/TSX Composite Index ended the volatile session with a 16-point gain at 35,519.

Technology stocks extended their rally. On the other hand, weakness in many other key sectors like real estate, healthcare, and consumer staples dragged on the broader market and prevented the TSX from building a more convincing advance.

Top TSX Composite movers and active stocks

Athabasca Oil (TSX: ATH) jumped 13.5% to around $12 per share, making it the top-performing TSX stock for the day. This buying spree in ATH stock came after the Calgary-based energy firm agreed to be acquired by Cenovus Energy (TSX: CVE) in a cash-and-stock transaction valued at roughly $5.8 billion in equity and $5.7 billion on an enterprise-value basis.

Under the deal, Athabasca shareholders are set to receive $12 per share, reflecting a 14% premium to the stock’s 20-day volume-weighted average price, with the overall consideration expected to consist of 65% to 75% cash and 25% to 35% Cenovus shares. While investors cheered the takeover premium for Athabasca, Cenovus Energy shares fell about 3% yesterday, likely reflecting the near-term financing and integration implications of the large acquisition.

Spartan Delta, Shopify, and Kelt Exploration were also among the day’s top gainers on the Toronto Stock Exchange, with each climbing by at least 3.9%.

Despite weaker oil and precious metals prices, Canadian stocks staged a rebound on Friday as significantly worse-than-expected U.S. jobs data strengthened expectations that the Federal Reserve could take a more accommodative stance in the coming months. As a result, the S&P/TSX Composite Index climbed by 348 points, or 1%, to settle at 35,503 – marking its best single-day performance in over two weeks and snapping a four-session losing streak.

Despite weakness in some key sectors like healthcare and real estate, strong intraday gains in technology, industrial, and financial stocks drove the TSX benchmark higher.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, nonfarm payroll employment increased by just 29,000 jobs in September, while the unemployment rate remained broadly steady at 4.2%. Although the weak hiring figures pointed to slowing labour market momentum, they also strengthened hopes that the Fed could have greater room to ease monetary policy.

Top TSX Composite movers and active stocks

Trekor Metals, Ero Copper, Teck Resources, and Lundin Mining were the top-performing TSX stocks for the day, with each climbing by at least 5.2%.

Shares of Canadian Pacific Kansas City (TSX: CP) also inched up by nearly 2% to $122.51 each after the railway giant posted record grain transportation volumes across Canada and the United States. In September, CPKC moved 2.9 million metric tonnes of grain and grain products in Canada and 2.5 million metric tonnes in the United States.

CPKC also set third-quarter records for both carloads and metric tonnes of grain in the two countries. Combined Canadian and U.S. grain volumes reached new records for both September and the third quarter, surpassing previous highs set in 2020. The strong grain transportation volumes supported investor sentiment toward CP stock.

In contrast, Allied Properties REIT, Extendicare, Exchange Income, and Air Canada slid by at least 3.6% each, making them the session’s worst-performing TSX stocks.

Based on their daily trade volume data, Canadian Natural Resources, TD Bank, Suncor Energy, Enbridge, and Telus were the five most active stocks on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

TSX today

Crude oil prices went sideways in early Monday trading, but metals prices across the board moved higher, which could offer some support for the resource-heavy TSX at the open today.

 While no major domestic economic releases are due, Canadian investors may want to keep an eye on the latest U.S. services purchasing managers’ index (PMI) figures this morning.

Investors will also watch the U.S.-Iran conflict, with diplomacy still stalled and tensions around the Strait of Hormuz threatening energy flows. Iran said it is reviewing Washington’s latest response while warning it remains prepared for renewed military confrontation.

Fresh attacks on shipping and reported Houthi strikes on Saudi energy infrastructure could keep crude prices volatile and TSX energy stocks in focus.

Canada-U.S. trade tensions also remain unresolved, with major sticking points still blocking an agreement.

Given these mixed signals, the TSX may remain sensitive to commodity price movements, bond yields, and geopolitical headlines today.

Canadian equities continued to decline for the fourth consecutive session on Thursday as falling metals prices and concerning geopolitical and trade uncertainties kept investors cautious. The S&P/TSX Composite Index fell 81 points, or 0.2%, to settle at 35,155.

Despite buying in technology and energy stocks, continued weakness in other key market sectors like mining, industrials, and consumer cyclicals dragged the TSX benchmark down.

Top TSX Composite movers and active stocks

DPM Metals, Trekor Metals, Saputo and Montage Gold dived by 3.9% each, making them the worst-performing TSX stocks for the day.

In contrast, Enerflex (TSX: EFX) was the top-performing TSX stock, as its shares jumped nearly 12% to $36.23 each. This rally in EFX stock came after the Calgary-based company secured a major Engineered Systems contract for a large-scale North American data centre development.

Under the contract, Enerflex will design, engineer, fabricate, and assemble about 450 megawatts of behind-the-meter natural gas-fired power generation units, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2027 and finish in 2028. The company also said its opportunity pipeline for power generation projects continues to exceed 2 gigawatts. The sizeable contract and Enerflex’s growing exposure to power demand from artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure boosted investor optimism.

5N Plus, Aecon, and CGI also jumped by at least 4.2% each, making them the session’s top gainers on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

According to the exchange’s daily trade volume data, Canadian Natural Resources, Scotiabank, Telus, First Quantum Minerals, and Suncor Energy were the five most active stocks.

TSX today

Crude oil prices fell sharply while gold and silver climbed in early trading on Friday. While lower crude prices may weigh on TSX energy stocks, stronger precious metals prices could provide some support to mining shares and help offset weakness elsewhere in the market.

With no major domestic economic releases due, TSX investors will keep an eye on the key U.S. jobs report this morning.

Canadian investors will also continue to monitor developments in the Canada-U.S. trade dispute.
